UK Approves Actiq (Oral Transmucosal Fentanyl Citrate) For Management Of Breakthrough Pain HENLEY ON THAMES, U.K. -- October 11, 2000 -- Anesta UK Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Anesta Corp. announced that the Medicines Control Agency (MCA) in the United Kingdom has granted a marketing authorisation for Actiq® (oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate). Actiq is the first product approved in the UK which is specifically indicated for the management of breakthrough pain in patients already receiving maintenance opioid therapy for chronic pain. Elan Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (a unit of Elan Corporation, plc) will market Actiq in the UK and market launch is targeted for early 2001. Anesta intends to enter Actiq into the European Mutual Recognition Procedure, aiming to obtain Marketing Authorisations in 16 other countries. "We are pleased to announce this significant achievement in the global commercialization of Actiq. The UK has a very strong tradition of pain management with an extensive network of hospices and pain clinics, and a large visiting nurse organization for patients treated in the home," stated Franck P. Kiser, Anesta Vice President of European Operations. "We feel that these groups will all be strong catalysts to make Actiq a commercial success in the UK." "Breakthrough pain is a significant problem in the UK and Europe," states Dr. Mary Nugent, Consultant Palliative Medicine & Medical Director of St. Luke's Hospice, Plymouth. "This novel drug delivery system represents an important advance in our ability to quickly and effectively control pain that if left untreated, worsens patient distress." Professor Geoffrey Hanks, of Bristol University states, "As a research clinician who has worked with Actiq, I believe it represents an important step forward in the management of one of the most difficult types of pain to treat in cancer patients and as such, I am pleased that it will now be available to us to prescribe for patients."
