"These study results show that proven and established drugs like Zerit, when combined with Sustiva and Epivir give patients a well tolerated first line treatment option which was successful over a long period of time," said Cal Cohen, M.D., Research Director, Community Research Initiative of New England. "Additionally, the convenient dosing schedule of this regimen should make it easier for patients to adhere to this simple triple combination therapy." Results from study DMP 266-043 showed that the combination of the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors Zerit and Epivir, plus the non-nucleoside Sustiva, was effective in reducing viral load in patients who were above 100,000 copies/mL at baseline. Patients with high viral loads are often difficult to fully control. Using the most stringent statistical analysis (non completer = failure) from the study, an impressive 73 percent of patients achieved viral loads of less than 50 copies/mL. A mean increase in CD4 cells of 318 cells/mm3 was observed. "This study shows that this regimen is successful at reducing viral loads in patients with high baseline viral loads who typically don't respond well to standard HIV treatment," said Cohen. "Using the more stringent analysis, we are pleased that nearly 80 percent of the patients were below 50 copies/mL at the end of the study." Sixty-eight patients were enrolled in the open-label, single-arm multicenter study. Treatment-related adverse experiences (Grade 2 or above in >5 percent or more of patients) were abdominal pain, dizziness, headache and nausea. Three patients discontinued the study because of side effects. Related Links: Sustiva (efavirenz), Zerit (stavudine) and Epivir (lamivudine).
