CHICAGO, IL -- August 22, 2000 -- Long term treatment with a novel angiotensin II (AII) receptor antagonist -- CS-866 (olmesartan) -- decreases blood pressure and plasma AII levels. At the 18th Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH), Dr. Shuichi Ichkawa of the Cardiovascular Hospital of Central Japan in Seta-gun, Gunma, Japan, presented the results of a small study designed to evaluate the effect of olmesartan on hypertension and its impact on endocrine parameters. The study included 14 men and 12 women with an average age of 53. The average blood pressure was 164/100 mm Hg and most patients had received no previous treatment for hypertension. After a four-week placebo run-in period, olmesartan was titrated from 5 to 40 mg/day until a sufficient blood pressure effect was observed. Most patients demonstrated well-controlled blood pressure at 20 mg/day. There was no significant increase in pulse rate. The angiotensin levels were significantly decreased (a 58 percent reduction for angiotensin I and a 67 percent reduction for AII) after one year of treatment. Olmesartan was able to significantly decrease both the systolic and diastolic blood pressure in healthy adults to an average of 136/84 mm Hg. Future research will focus on the mechanism behind the surprising decrease in angiotensin levels. Olmesartan was discovered by Sankyo in Japan and the company anticipates filing a New Drug Application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the middle of next year.
