Dr. L. Poritz of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada evaluated three men and five women who underwent cytotoxic chemotherapy for inoperable gastrointestinal obstruction and/or uncontrolled pain due to desmoid tumors. The results were presented at the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeon's Meeting, in Boston, MA. They were treated with doxorubicin and dacarbazine followed by caroplatin and dacarbazine. The follow-up time was 34 months after treatment. Seven patients had partial remission following cytotoxic chemotherapy with stable regression of their tumor. One patient had a minimal remission. Most patients with inoperable desmoid tumors showed a substantial response to cytotoxic chemotherapy; however, two patients required additional therapy. The researchers concluded that cytotoxic chemotherapy is effective in producing both short- and long-term remission in these patients.
