Amplicor CT/NG Test For Chlamydia And Gonorrhea Gives Same-Day Results

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- April 7, 2000 -- Women, and men, often have chlamydia and gonorrhea, two of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), for months or years without even knowing it. If left untreated, both diseases can have devastating long-term health effects, such as, for women, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), increased risks associated with infertility and HIV-1 disease, and for men, complications such as extreme pain upon urination.

Since both of these STDs can be easily treated with a single dose of oral medication once detected, it makes good sense to be tested early on, particularly if you suspect you or your partner might be at risk.

In the past, two separate tests had to be conducted for these diseases, with men being subjected to the discomfort associated with obtaining a urethral swab and women often having to undergo a full pelvic exam. Now, for the first time, a new test is available which can screen for both diseases simultaneously using a single patient sample. Called the "Amplicor(R) CT/NG Test" and manufactured by Roche Diagnostics, this FDA cleared test uses state- of-the-art testing technology called PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). The Amplicor test gives same day results and has been clinically proven to provide more accurate results in obtaining positive samples than more traditional testing methodologies. The dual test is particularly more attractive to men since it can be done simply by obtaining a urine specimen from them.

Urine samples from males and females, as well as female endocervical and male urethral swabs can be used with the new Roche test. For gonorrhea testing, sample types include female endocervical, male urethral and male urine.
