| | | ![]() Minesse (Gestodene/Ethinyl Estradiol), Low-Dose Contraceptive, Approved In Europe MADISON, NJ -- March 23, 2000 -- Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals, the pharmaceutical division of American Home Products Corporation, announced that Minesse (R) (gestodene 60 mcg/ethinyl estradiol 15 mcg) oral contraceptive has cleared the Mutual Recognition procedure needed for marketing in 11 European Union countries. These countries include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. This milestone will expedite marketing availability of the lowest dose oral contraceptive in Europe. Each country will issue marketing authorizations during the next three months and launches will proceed thereafter. Minesse offers women the lowest dose oral contraceptive in a unique 24-day regimen with the same [99 percent] efficacy as higher dose oral contraceptives. "In a clinical study with Minesse, women reported fewer discontinuations due to breast tenderness or nausea which are common side effects reported with oral contraceptives. This is good news for women who experience these side effects," says Harold K. Marder, M.D., Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs and Medical Director, Wyeth-Ayerst Global Pharmaceuticals. The 24-day regimen and low-dose formulation in Minesse are a genuine step forward for women. In clinical studies, Minesse, which reduces the pill-free or placebo interval from 7 to 4 days, provided excellent ovarian suppression and a reduction in hormonal variability. Data from the clinical trials indicate that users of MINESSE(R) had shorter, lighter periods when compared to users of a widely used conventional 21-day oral contraceptive. There can be side effects with Minesse . As with all oral contraceptives, serious as well as minor adverse reactions have been reported. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects from oral contraceptive use. Women who use oral contraceptives should be strongly advised not to smoke. Oral contraceptives do not protect against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
