Easy-To-Use Monitor That Screens Both Cholesterol and Glucose Levels

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 22, 1997-- A new palm-sized monitor does double-duty as a disease management tool, requiring only a drop of whole blood from a finger stick sample to provide a total cholesterol value in exactly three minutes or a blood glucose value in 12 seconds. The Accu-Chek(R) InstantPlus(TM) System -- introduced today by Boehringer Mannheim Corporation (BMC), a world leader in medical diagnostics -- is an economically priced, over-the-counter, CLIA waived monitor designed for use by physicians, pharmacy screening programs and home healthcare providers.

"The Accu-Chek InstantPlus System can immediately identify patients who may be at risk for coronary heart disease and diabetes," explains Chuck Wyman, product manager, BMC. "In addition, this new system is CLIA waived which provides greater access for all physicians to run cholesterol and blood glucose tests as part of the standard in-office consultation. That means physicians can make therapy decisions immediately or monitor their patients' therapy compliance on the spot. Ultimately, this new instrument can minimize staff folllow-up time, and also facilitate patient education."

BMC is a world leader in the fields of diabetes testing, lab automation and biochemicals, and has a successful track record in offering point-of-care products such as its well known Accu-Chek line of blood glucose monitors. This new Accu-Chek InstantPlus System offers monitoring of two prevalent and serious conditions which require effective therapy and monitoring.

For instance, total cholesterol testing helps identify those persons who may be at risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), which is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. According to the National Institutes of Health, CHD accounts for about 500,000 deaths each year. "Since 70 percent of adults with diabetes also have high or borderline high blood cholesterol levels," notes Chuck Wyman, "the Accu-Chek InstantPlus provides a valuable dual service in a single monitor." Prevention efforts have been shown to increase longevity, improve quality of life, and mitigate the costs of hospitalization, heart operations, or medications required for long-term care, according to the National Cholesterol Education Program.

Using the Accu-Chek InstantPlus System eliminates sample icing and transportation to the lab, and is as simple as turning on the monitor, inserting the appropriate test strip, applying a small sample of whole blood from a simple fingerstick, and reading the results. The system self-checks for proper operation every time the monitor is turned on, and every box of reagents includes coded-lot specific information. The monitor displays test results in 180 seconds for total cholesterol levels and 12 seconds for glucose levels.
