Australia Approves Tobi (Tobramycin) For Cystic Fibrosis Patients With Pneumonia

SEATTLE, WA -- February 23, 2000 -- PathoGenesis Corp. announced that its drug Tobi(R) (tobramycin solution for inhalation) has received marketing clearance from the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia. Tobi is indicated for the management of cystic fibrosis patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, which occur in the lungs. The drug will be distributed by AMRAD Pharmaceuticals Pty. Limited, Victoria, Australia.

"Tobi's approval in Australia is excellent news. This is an important market for our inhaled antibiotic as part of our worldwide expansion strategy," said Wilbur H. Gantz, chairman and chief executive officer of PathoGenesis.

"AMRAD welcomes the approval of Tobi for Australian cystic fibrosis patients, as it demonstrates the company's proven capability to market innovative new drugs," said Rob Manser, General Manager, AMRAD Pharmaceuticals.

Tobi is one of the first drugs to be designated as an orphan drug in Australia. An estimated 2,500 people in Australia have cystic fibrosis, a serious genetic disease that primarily affects Caucasians. Tobi is designed for these patients to take at home in repeated cycles of 28 days on drug, 28 days off drug. It is inhaled twice daily and requires about 15 minutes each time.

Seattle-based PathoGenesis Corp. develops and commercializes drugs to treat chronic infectious diseases -- particularly serious lung infections, including those common in cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis and ventilator patients.

AMRAD Corporation Limited is an Australian research-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology company. Based in Melbourne, Victoria, AMRAD conducts research and development to discover and develop innovative medicines. AMRAD Pharmaceuticals Pty. Limited is a joint venture company (55 percent owned by AMRAD, 45 percent owned by Merck Sharp and Dohme (Australia) Pty. Limited) that markets ethical pharmaceuticals to Australian healthcare providers.
