| | | ![]() Zoladex May Further Reduce Breast Cancer Recurrence In Premenopausal Women SAN ANTONIO, TX -- December 10, 1999 -- Several presentations involving AstraZeneca’s new breast cancer drugs were made at the 22nd Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, one of the world's leading meetings devoted to new advances in breast cancer. The analysis, conducted by researchers from Europe including the Cancer Research Campaign & UCL Cancer Trial Center in London, included 2631 premenopausal patients from four studies who were followed over 4.3 years. It was designed to measure the efficacy of Zoladex as an addition to standard treatment (surgery with or without radiotherapy or tamoxifen or chemotherapy) in young women with early-stage breast cancer. Unlike many other therapies, Zoladex induces a reversible form of ovarian suppression, thus potentially preserving reproductive capabilities for younger breast cancer patients. An estimated 176,300 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the US this year.(2) More than 50,800 of these women will be under the age of 50.(3) Zoladex is one of the few hormonal therapies currently approved for young women with advanced breast cancer. These new data indicates that young women with earlier stages of the disease may benefit from Zoladex, offering them a new hormonal therapy and increasing their treatment options.
