Akne-mycin Available In U.S. For Acne Treatment

FORT WORTH, TX -- October 6, 1999 -- Healthpoint, Ltd., announced today that it is marketing Akne-mycin®, a 2% prescription erythromycin ointment for the treatment of acne vulgaris and one that is an ideal acne therapy for sensitive skin.

Akne-mycin’s unique, non-comedogenic antibiotic formula is clinically effective in the significant reduction in Propionibacterium acnes levels. In a 12-week clinical study, 92 percent of patients using Akne-mycin experienced no peeling, and 80 percent experienced no erythema (an abnormal redness of the skin) when compared to its vehicle alone. Akne-mycin also reduced mean inflammatory lesion counts by 46 percent when compared to baseline.

Akne-mycin does not cause sensitization, photo-irritation or photo-sensitization. It may be used concurrently with other topical agents such as tretinoin or benzoyl peroxide. Acne-mycin is for topical use only. Safe use during pregnancy or lactation has not been established.

Akne-mycin ointment’s creamy, moisturizing formula makes it more appealing to acne patients with atopic dermatitis who live in cold or dry climates or who prefer an ointment with a moisturizing quality.

About Embeline ™ E Emollient, 0.05 percent:

Healthpoint, Ltd., also announced today an extended usage period for Embeline ™ E Emollient, 0.05 percent, for treating moderate-to-severe plaque-type psoriasis. The prescription, class 1 super-high potency steroid cream was introduced earlier this year.

In the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque-type psoriasis, Embeline ™ E Emollient, 0.05% (clobetasol propionate cream-emollient) applied to 5 percent to 10 percent of body surface area can now be used for up to four consecutive weeks. The total dosage should not exceed 50 g/week. When dosing for more than two weeks, any additional benefits of extending treatment should be weighed against the risk of HPA suppression. Treatment beyond four consecutive weeks is not recommended. Patients should be instructed to use Embeline™ E Emollient for the minimum amount of time necessary to achieve the desired results. Use in pediatric patients under 16 years of age has not been studied.
