This marks the first peer-reviewed presentation of the pivotal results, which were included in the company’s applications for marketing approval of Pennsaid® Lotion in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. "We are delighted to be able to present such good news for osteoarthritis patients and to do so at this prestigious conference," said Rebecca Keeler, President and CEO of Dimethaid Research. "Osteoarthritis affects a large and rapidly growing number of people and we believe the data we are presenting confirms the significant site specific pain relief afforded by Pennsaid Lotion. In fact, none of the evaluable patients who dropped out of this trial because of inadequate pain relief were from the Pennsaid arm of the study." The double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of Pennsaid was conducted with patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee. The primary outcome measure used the pain subscale of the WOMAC OA Index and secondary outcome measures used subscales for stiffness and physical function, as well as a patient global assessment. Statistical analysis demonstrated that Pennsaid provided significant benefit as compared with both a "control" (carrier containing DMSO) and a "placebo" (negligible DMSO) for both the primary and all secondary outcome measurements (p less than 0.05). Dimethaid Research has developed a proprietary transdermal delivery system that facilitates the delivery of drugs to the site of disease with minimal systemic absorption. Pennsaid Lotion is the first product developed by the Company that incorporates this unique carrier technology. Dimethaid International Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary, is negotiating distribution rights for Pennsaid Lotion in various markets. The first alliance announced is with McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Dimethaid International and McNeil Consumer Healthcare have entered into a standstill agreement for US distribution rights to the product. OARSI was convened in 1990 to promote and encourage fundamental and applied research, and to disseminate the results of that research in order to permit better knowledge of osteoarthritis and of its treatment. OARSI members include physicians, researchers, and other health industry personnel from around the world. Osteoarthritis is the most common articular rheumatic disease in the world.
