Muse Treatment For Impotence Now Available

MENLO PARK, Calif., Jan. 15, 1997 -- VIVUS, Inc. (Nasdaq: VVUS) today announced that MUSE (alprostadil), a new treatment for erectile dysfunction, is now available by prescription throughout the United States.

"MUSE offers men and their partners a convenient, discreet treatment that can be easily integrated into a patient's sex life," said J. Francois Eid, M.D., professor of urology, Cornell University School of Medicine. "It is clearly a very effective, desirable treatment choice and should be considered the first-line therapy for all causes of erectile dysfunction."

MUSE (alprostadil) is a pre-filled, single-use, plastic applicator containing a micro-suppository of the drug alprostadil, a medication that increases penile blood flow. The stem of the applicator is inserted approximately one inch into the urethra where the medication is released. MUSE (alprostadil) is a departure from existing therapies for erectile dysfunction, based on the discovery that certain medications can be absorbed by the urethra and transported into the surrounding erectile tissues.

"Since the FDA clearance of MUSE (alprostadil), we have been focused on building our marketing infrastructure and extensively training our sales force in preparation for product introduction," said Leland F. Wilson, president and chief executive officer of VIVUS. "I am pleased to report that -- as of today -- men and their partners now have access to a safe and effective, easy-to- use, new treatment for impotence."

VIVUS recently initiated direct marketing of MUSE (alprostadil) to consumers through the approximately 11,000 erectile dysfunction physician specialists in the United States. VIVUS' 55 sales professionals are strategically located throughout the country and work closely with physicians and health care professionals to increase awareness and education, emphasizing the treatable nature of erectile dysfunction.

VIVUS has developed a comprehensive U.S. distribution system to provide efficient distribution of MUSE (alprostadil) and provide quality customer service. VIVUS' relationship with CORD, Inc., a subsidiary of Cardinal Health, Inc., provides full-range warehousing, distribution to wholesalers, inventory control, invoicing and trade customer service. The company's relationship with Alternate Site Distribution (ASD), a subsidiary of Bergen Brunswig Corporation, provides "direct-to-physician" distribution, telemarketing and physician customer service capabilities.

In addition, VIVUS has established a dedicated confidential information line for patients staffed by trained registered nurses -- 1-888-367-MUSE (6873) -- and a medical professionals information line -- 1-888-345-MUSE (6873).

Founded in 1991, VIVUS, Inc. is a leader in the development of advanced therapeutic systems for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. VIVUS has pioneered a novel therapy for erectile dysfunction known as the transurethral system for erection. This therapy consists of a proprietary, non-invasive, drug delivery system that delivers pharmacologic agents via the urethra. Information is also available by visiting the VIVUS web site -- www.vivus.com.
