Vitravene Approved In Europe For CMV In AIDS Patients

CARLSBAD, CA -- Aug. 4, 1999 -- The European Union has approved CIBA Vision’s Vitravene(TM) (fomivirsen) for the local treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMV) in patients with AIDS in newly diagnosed or advanced CMV retinitis when other therapies are considered unsuitable or have been ineffective.

Under a separate application filed by CIBAVision, Vitravene recently received registration approval in Brazil.

Vitravene is an antisense inhibitor of CMV replication, the virus that causes retinitis. CMV retinitis is a degenerative opportunistic infection that affects people with AIDS and often results in blindness.

"This approval is important as Vitravene is a beneficial treatment option to patients with CMV retinitis." said Stanley Crooke, M.D., Ph.D. "We remain confident Vitravene represents only the first of many antisense drugs to reach the market and provide significant benefits to patients. "
