DG DISPATCH - EULAR: No Difference In Efficacy Between Various Bisphosphonates

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND -- June 10, 1999 -- Results of a study comparing Merck’s Fosamax™ (alendronate) with etidronate, clodronate and ibandronate show there do not appear to be significant differences in efficacy between these four bisphosphonates at doses studied for the treatment of osteoporosis.

The results of this one-year study were presented during a poster session at the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) yesterday by Dr. Gabriele Lehmann and colleagues at the department of internal medicine, rheumatology and osteology unit, Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Jena, Germany.

A total of 88 patients were randomised to receive one of four treatments: alendronate (10mg/day), etidronate (400 cycles), clodronate (520 cycles) and ibandronate (two cycles IV).

The mean ages for the groups were: alendronate 64.0, etidronate 60.3, clodronate 61.0 and ibandronate 66.2.

Increases in bone mass density (BMD) at the lumbar spine and femoral neck were not significantly different for the four treatment arms but alendronate produced the greatest increase in BMD (2.1 to 2.5 percent) at the trochanter.

Overall there did not appear to be significant differences in efficacy between the four drugs at these doses, Dr. Lehmann said.
